Mokihana Festival Celebrates 40th Anniversary!
Excerpts: HawaiiNewsNow
One of Kaua‘i’s longest running festivals is preparing to celebrate its 40th anniversary, and Mālie Foundation’s organizers are hopeful it will entice both locals and visitors alike.
Kaua‘i Mokihana Festival 2024 is set for Sept. 22 to Sept. 28 with various events scattered around the islands. Ka Makahiki O Na Mea Ho’okani, or year of instruments & implements, is the theme for this year’s celebration.
Events include a Hawaiian Church Service, Composer’s Song Contest, along with hula and implement workshops. The highlight event ends the week with the kahiko and ‘auana hula competitions and craft fair at the War Memorial Convention Hall.
Kumu Maka Herrod-Mālie Foundation’s President, and Iwalani Ka‘auwai-Herrod say 11 halau from across the state and even Japan are set to compete.
“The festival actually started off as a hula competition only for Kāne (men). Very interestingly, you know, and I believe they just wanted to promote more kāne; more of our kāne to participate,” said Iwalani Herrod.
It’s even grown beyond the shores of the islands as organizers are also excited to bring this festival back to Japan in February 2025.

Travel Trade on Kauaʻi:
On September 16, the Kaua‘i Visitors Bureau (KVB) partnered with the Hawai‘i Tourism Authority (HTA) Cruise Industry FAM and Stakeholders Mixer. Cruise industry representatives were from the Carnival Cruise Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, and accompanied by Access Cruise, Inc. The group sited the Nāwiliwili Harbor and toured the island by air with Blue Hawaiian Helicopters. Kaua‘i stakeholders were invited to meet the cruise lines group at a mixer held at Duke’s Kaua‘i on updates of the cruise line industry. The next day, they visited the Kaua‘i Museum, participated in a Cooking Kaua‘i class, a site visit of Kilohana Plantation, and ended with a Kaua‘i Rum Safari tour.
