Lanikai
Introducing “Lanikai”, an intimate and authentic cultural tour and lūʻau experience celebrating the heritage of Kahalu`u in Kona. The evening event blends education with tradition and is brought to life by Kumu Hula and sisters Kaʻea Lyons-Yglesias and Kahelelani Alohikea Smith, who have direct lineage to the ‘Ohana Ali`i of Kahalu`u.
Held oceanfront in Kahalu`u, the Friday evening events include a traditional lei greeting and hoʻokupu (gift giving) to honor the land, a guided look at restored sacred sites that are foundational to Hawaiian history, ancient and modern hula by Hālau Kaʻeaikahelelani, performed by dancers of all ages ranging from keiki to kupuna, and a Farm-to-Table Feast by Hawaiʻi Island Catering Company, featuring local flavors and fresh ingredients from the Pacific.
Because the kumu hula are descendants of the land, the protocols and stories shared are authentic and a continuation of their family’s heritage. All proceeds from the event benefit the non-profit hālau - Hālau Kaʻeaikahelelani (kikhula.com) - and their work to maintain the Hawaiian language and traditions year-round.
Lanikai is held each Friday from 5 to 8 p.m., oceanfront at Kahaluʻu in Kona 78-6741 Aliʻi Dr, Kailua-Kona, HI 96740. For reservations - https://www.lanikaikona.com/.
