From The Director
What if you had a way to make an impression on thousands of affluent visitors and it didn't cost you a penny?
Attention, Association Members:
As an HVCB member one of your benefits is participation in the Affiliation Logo service. This service displays your logo on any mutual member's listing on the gohawaii.com website. We encourage association members to use this service so that mutual members can show support and participation in the various organizations. It is an enhancement as well as a way to assist the consumer reviewing their information and offers. For example, a consumer will sometimes contact the Bureau and ask if a particular company is well known, in good standing, etc. Active participation in other associations builds credibility.
If you wish to participate (it costs you nothing, so what's to lose?) we ask that you provide the following:
1. Digital copy of your association's logo, specifically your member logo if available. The image should be 80 x 80 pixels or similar. E-mail to gsalvador@hvcb.org.
2. List your current members. Electronic format (Excel, Access) is preferred but hard copies are acceptable. Please provide complete contact information so that we can cross reference the list against our list of HVCB members. The fields that are required are (a) contact person, (b) company address or fax/e-mail. This should also be e-mailed to gsalvador@hvcb.org or faxed to (808) 924-0284.
Note: Unless you have any specific requirements regarding the addition or removal of businesses from your roster, we will request a new list at your annual renewal with HVCB, and update our database accordingly.
And finally, if you have questions about the Affiliation Logo Service, please contact Gina Salvador at gsalvador@hvcb.org.

Big Island Visitors Bureau puts out a call to America.
The Big Island Visitors Bureau is looking for a few good travel writers. Faced with travel uncertainty caused by 9/11 and the war in Iraq, the bureau has launched a program to invite 50 travel journalists, one from each of the 50 states to experience Hawaii's Big Island and write about it.
Writers are invited to submit an application to BIVB including their story ideas (idea must focus on an interesting aspect of the Big Island as a travel destination) and a writing sample (either a published destination focus or travel article.) All applications will be carefully reviewed and one writer from each state will be selected.
BIVB will provide round trip coach airfare, hotel accommodations for seven nights and a per diem to cover on-island transportation and meals. Writing trip may be taken anytime between May 1 and December 15, 2003.
The deadline for application submission is April 15, 2003. Selected journalists will be notified of BIVB's decisions by April 30. Applications are available by calling Laura Aquino at (808) 326-5634 or email at laquino@current-events.com.

Hilo - Tuesday, May 27, 2003 West Hawaii - Tuesday, June 10, 2003 Kauai - Thursday, June 26, 2003 Maui - Monday, June 30, 2003 Lanai - Tuesday, August 12, 2003 Molokai - Monday, November 10, 2003

HVCB participates in the Really Big Show.
The Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau - Developing International Markets Division promoted Hawaii to the German and European markets with its participation in the International Tourism Exchange ITB Berlin, March 7-11, 2003.
ITB Berlin is the world's largest travel tradeshow for the global tourism industry. 9,971 exhibitors from 181 countries and territories took part in ITB 2003. More than 129,000 visitors attended the event, with 6,500 journalists from 79 countries rounding off the count.
HVCB joined the "See America Pavilion", with Regina Bopp (HVCB's Worldwide Representative in Germany) and Maynard Torchiana of Destination Resorts Hawaii leading the promotion. Bopp and Torchiana met with key wholesalers and travel agents in promoting destination tour packages highlighting Hawaii's diversity and range of attractions.
Visitors from Germany and Europe overall represent a lucrative market for Hawaii. On average, visitors from Europe stay longer (12.07 days) than visitors from other markets (9.16 days), with the exception of visitors from Canada, who stay slightly longer (12.16 days).
More significantly, European visitors spend more money while in Hawaii ($1,935 per person) on average than visitors from any other market ($1,605 per person).
Hawaii's promotion at ITB Berlin is also intended to take advantage of Germany's improving tourism market, particularly when it comes to travel to U.S. destinations. According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, International Trade Administration, Office of Travel and Tourism Industries, Germany visitors coming to the U.S. are expected to increase by 7 percent in 2003, followed by visitor increases of 11 percent in 2004 and 6 percent in 2005.
For more information on ITB, please contact Michele Lee, Event Coordinator at (808) 924-0240, or via e-mail at mlee@hvcb.org.
Hawaii Welcomes CCTV - The Largest TV Network in China
The Department of Business Economic Development and Tourism (DBEDT) and the Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau joined efforts in welcoming CCTV - the largest television network in Mainland China, March 23 - 28, 2003.
CCTV is producing a serial drama titled "Honor" aimed to air in the 8:00 PM time slot between May and October 2003 in China. "Honor" is based on a true story that took place in the Henan province in 1999, where a congress representative embezzled public money and escaped to the United States to live the American dream. With much difficulty, Chinese law enforcement officials finally took the former congress representative into custody and sent him back to China. "Honor" is the first government-approved series featuring an important and well-known criminal case. It is expected to draw major attention throughout China.
CCTV has traveled to New York, Las Vegas, and Los Angeles in producing "Honor", and is shooting the final episode in Hawaii at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. HVCB assisted CCTV in securing hotel accommodations at the Ohana Waikiki West.
Mahalo to all our members who have supported CCTV!
For more information on CCTV, please contact Michele Lee, Event Coordinator at (808) 924-0240, or via e-mail at mlee@hvcb.org.
