AAA

American Automobile Association; a nationwide organization that provides members with services that include travel agencies, highway services, legal services and travel and automobile insurance. www.aaa.com

ASAE

American Society of Association Executives; known as the “association of associations,” the society is dedicated to advancing the value of voluntary associations to society and supporting the professionalism of the individuals who lead them.  HVCB hosted an ASAE convention in August 2003. www.asaenet.org

ASTA

American Society of Travel Agents; the world's largest association of travel professionals. They are the leading advocate for travel agents, the travel industry and the traveling public. HVCB hosted an ASTA convention in November 2002. www.astanet.com

CVB

Convention and Visitors Bureau; These organizations are local tourism marketing organizations specializing in developing conventions, meetings, conferences and visitations to a city, county or region.

Convention and visitor bureaus are not-for-profit organizations charged with representing a specific destination and helping the long-term development of communities through a travel and tourism strategy. CVBs are usually membership organizations bringing together businesses that rely on tourism and meetings for revenue.

For visitors, CVBs are like a key to the city. As an unbiased resource, CVBs can serve as a broker or an official point of contact for convention and meeting planners, tour operators and visitors. They assist planners with meeting preparation and encourage business travelers and visitors alike to visit local historic, cultural and recreational sites.

A list of various consumer-based events occurring throughout the Islands of Aloha found on the gohawaii.com website.

Citywide

Used to describe a very large convention which will need numerous hotels to house the delegates and will use the convention center.

Client Promo

The CMI team in conjunction with members work toward securing meeting and incentive business to Hawaii by hosting and introducing various meeting planners and other clients to cultural, sporting and dining events throughout Hawaii.

Consumer

Used by the CVB to refer to leisure travelers.

Consumer Site

Cooperative Advertising

Advertising funded by two or more destinations and/or suppliers.

Cooperative Marketing

Marketing programs involving two or more participating companies, institutions or organizations.

Cooperative Partner

An independent firm or organization which works with a tourism office by providing cash or in-kind contributions to expand the marketing impact of the tourism office's program.

Each diner at a restaurant.

DBEDT

Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism; State agency focused on engaging and partnering with the business community to create new opportunities and synergies to help business succeed in Hawaii and in the World. http://www2.hawaii.gov/dbedt/index.cfm

DMAI

Destination Marketing Association International; formerly known as International Association of Convention and Visitors Bureaus (IACVB). DMAI is a trade association whose mission is to enhance the professionalism, effectiveness and image of destination management organizations worldwide. www.iacvb.org

DMC

Destination management company; generally provides complete onsite management of meetings and conventions.

Destination Marketing

Marketing a city, state, country, area or region to consumers and trade.

Destination Marketing Organization

Local tourism marketing organizations, such as convention and visitors bureaus or chambers of commerce.

Educational Forum

An educational meeting which helps facilitate networking and educational opportunities specific to a destination

FIT

Free Independent Travel; Individual travel in which a tour operator has previously arranged blocks of rooms at various destinations in advance for use by individual travelers. These travelers travel independently, not in a group, usually by rental car or public transportation.

Fam

Familiarization Tour; a free or reduced-rate travel program to educate travel sellers about certain destinations in order to stimulate the sale of travel to that destination. By seeing the destinations where they are sending travelers, the travel trade is better prepared to answer customer questions and promote travel to the location.

Frequency

The number of times an advertisement appears during a given campaign.

Fulfillment

Servicing consumers and trade who request information as a result of advertising or promotional programs. Service often includes an 800 number, sales staff and distribution of materials.

Global Distribution System; computer reservation systems which have international communication abilities.

Society of Incentive & Travel Executives; not-for-profit, professional association devoted to the pursuit of excellence in incentives.

SMERF

Refers to the segment of the meetings market which includes social, military, education, religious or fraternal groups or associations.

Sharing Aloha

Program to assist groups traveling outside Hawaii share the Aloha Spirit!  This website (www.sharingaloha.com) assists groups in  sharing travel plans and perhaps along the way find opportunities for us to help one another when we travel outside the Islands and Share Aloha!

Shoulder Season

The rate season between high season and low season when demand is average and the travel product will not produce the highest price, but does not need a deep discount to generate traffic.

Site Visit

A tour of a property, venue or facility.  The CVB uses this to generally refer to visits by meeting planners to area hotels and attractions.

Supplier

The actual provider of a travel product such as the hotel, airline, cruise ship, car rental agency, etc.; not the travel agent or tour operator selling the product.

TAT

Transient Accommodations Tax (TAT), Hawaii’s Hotel tax (7.25%); 37.9% of the total revenue from the TAT is earmarked to create a Tourism Special Fund for tourism-related activities. This fund is estimated to be approximately $60 million annually.

TIA

Travel Industry Association of America; the Washington, D.C.-based association that represents and speaks for the common interests and concerns of all components of the U.S. travel industry. www.tia.org

Tourism Industry Update, a bi-weekly e-newsletter produced by our Market Trends Department highlighting tourism trends, visitor statistics and changes in market conditions.

Tour Operator

A company that negotiates discount rates, packages travel products, subcontracts their performance, prints brochures and markets these travel products through travel agents or directly to the general public.

Trade Shows

Trade shows differ from conventions in that they have exhibit space that provides product exhibition and sales opportunities for suppliers, as well as information gathering and buying opportunities for customers.

Travel Agent

A person qualified to advise and arrange travel needs for the traveling public, representing all travel suppliers worldwide.

Travel Consolidators

Negotiate airfares with airlines and sell them to retail and corporate travel agents.

Travel Trade

Travel Trade encompasses tour & cruise wholesalers, travel agents/ agencies, and travel media.  HVCB maintains ongoing communications, training and education as well as cooperative marketing programs and events designed to reinforce our overall initiatives for Hawaii statewide throughout the US and Canada.
