THE CHILDREN'S GARDEN OF PEACE
Thanks to a generous Grant-in-Aid from the Hawaii State Legislature and the Governor of Hawaii, Storybook Theatre is beginning an exciting new project, a garden honoring the late U.S. Senator Spark M. Matsunaga, one of Hawaii's most visionary heroes, and an advocate for peace in the world. The Children's Garden of Peace will be a safe and inspirational place, an outdoor classroom where students will be encouraged to look within and beyond to express their own unique stories.
Envisioned as a refuge where magic and learning can happen, the design of the entrance gate speaks of a place of dreams and imagination within. Down a winding path, under an arched trellis of foliage and mists, you will first experience a cooling rainforest environment of native plants. As the view opens, your attention is immediately drawn to the tall bronze sculpture of Sparky and his young friend. You discover a Japanese bridge crossing the stream to a lovely amphitheater where stories are told, songs sung and theater magic happens. Across the way at the head of the stream is the garden waterfall, and nearby gazebo, where classes are held, children do projects, and staff plan out the next production. Throughout the garden are benches where people can sit and savor the atmosphere around them. This is a Garden for the whole community to enjoy under the watchful eye of Hanapepe's very own, Spark Matsunaga.
